Our written sources

Though small in size, Alta Museum’s archives conveys exciting and diverse stories from the development and history of Alta. Amongst its treasures are the archives of the protest movement against the damming of the Alta-Kautokeino water system.

Our archives contains several large private archives, amongst these the aforementioned archives from the protest movement against the damming of the Alta-Kautokeino water system. This archive consists of nine shelf-metres of organized boxes, in addition to artefacts and photos. You can read more about this unique archive here: The Archives of a Protest Movement

Another important private archive in our collection belonged to local historian Kjell Roger Eikeset, it contains about eight shelf-metres of source material. The museum archive also contains a limited amount of archival material deposited here by others, for instance 6 shelf-metres from the archive of the Alta Historical Society.

You may access documents in our archives by contacting the museum in advance, provided the desired documents are not closed to public viewing or have other restrictions. Please contact curator Lena Karlstrøm by telephone + 47 94 89 95 73 or email leka@altamuseum.no.
