Sports fishing in the Alta River
The dream of the Alta River is in many a fisherman's heart. The natural surroundings and opportunities to enjoy the wide outdoors make Alta River an important part of the quality of life for the people who live in Alta.
The river is one of the best salmon rivers in the world, where there is a good chance of landing a record-size Atlantic salmon. It has been a magnet for sports fishermen around the world since the middle of the 19th century. The exhibition displays both older and newer fly fishing equipment along with the personal photos of the local population and films of life along the river.
— shows life both near and far from the river - the point where information, feelings, experiences and fishing stories meet and are shared.
The point of departure for the exhibition is a large collection of artefacts donated to the museum by Martin Heitmann, the earlier medical officer for Alta municipality and the county medical officer for Finnmark. The exhibition is arranged in three parts. The first part is about the development of fishing equipment from the mid 1800s with rods of greenheart and reels of solid brass, to the modern gear in carbon and aluminium. For all of our visitors who may not know the finer points of fly fishing, the second part of the exhibition shows how fly fishing equipment is built up and works together: the rod, reel, various lines, leaders and the fly itself. The third part shows life both near and far from the river - the point where information, feelings, experiences and fishing stories meet and are shared.
