Remarkable reindeer and rugged rocks – A sideway view at the Alta rock engravings
We know the beautiful and iconic rock carvings, but what about the strange, indistinct and maybe even funny figures? This exhibition gives you a new look at the Alta rock art - all the rock carvings are invited!
Experience the richness of the figures, from the popular reindeer to the rare hare, and see how motifs have varied over 5,000 years. Who created these images, and what did they want to say? Maybe it wasn't all about power and magic - maybe it was about life itself?
Rock carvings are a part of nature, carved into the rock and affected by the passing of time. They have withstood thousands of winters and summers, but nature cannot be stopped. This is also a central aspect of what rock carvings are.
The exhibition is based on the PhD research of Karin Tansem at Alta Museum.
Welcome to an exhibition that gives you a different encounter with the world heritage of rock art in Alta!
