Outdoor area closed
⚠️ The rock carving site is not maintained during winter ⚠️ NO Access
Due to snow and
slippery conditions, the outdoor area with the rock carvings is closed.
Fortunately, we have seven loose stones with real rock art in the museum's indoor exhibition, so you can still get a taste of both rock carvings and rock paintings. In addition, we offer exhibitions with various themes from Alta's exciting history.
When the first snow falls, we let the rock carvings be naturally covered by snow. This forms a thick, insulating layer that protects the carvings. Ice, on the other hand, can be harmful – especially if moisture seeps into cracks and expands when it freezes.
The carvings are now safely preserved under the snow and will not thaw until May. Exactly when this happens varies from year to year, depending on the weather, temperatures, and the amount of snow.
