Summer at Alta Museum
What’s happening at Alta Museum this summer?
Whether you live in Alta or are just visiting for a holiday, there’s plenty happening at Alta Museum this summer!
Visit the Rock Art of Alta
The Rock Art of Alta is one of Norway’s eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Around Alta Museum, accessible walking paths take you on a journey through the area and its unique history. There are around 3,000 rock carvings here, and the oldest are about 7,000 years old.
You can explore the area with a guide booklet, an audio guide, or by joining one of our guided tours with a real guide.
Explore our permanent exhibitions
Our permanent exhibitions give you an insight into Alta’s history from the Stone Age to the present day. The exhibitions are interactive and modern, and you can learn more about topics such as:
- the rock art
- the Northern Lights
- the Alta River and salmon fishing
- Sami and Kven history
- Alta slate
- geology
- and much more
Back to the Stone Age
From 22 June to 10 August, families can join fun summer activities at Alta Museum. We set up a lavvu tent by the sea, along with a campfire area, benches, and warm reindeer skins. Here, the whole family can learn more about life in the Stone Age and try different activities:
- Archery
- Make a frottage and learn how rock carvings were documented in the past
- Stone grinding
- Make your own Stone Age necklace
- Archaeological sandbox for the youngest children
It is also possible to buy sausages for grilling over the fire or enjoy a cup of campfire coffee.
