Since its discovery in 1973 the rock art in Alta has had a leading position in rock art and Stone Age research in Norway.
The rock art in Alta was discovered in the 1970s. It was Professor Emeritus Knut Helskog who travelled up from Tromsø to investigate the area. In the course of his long career he has published a number of articles in prestigious journals as well as several books on rock art. The material here in Alta is so comprehensive and so rich that it has served as a key to understanding rock art at other places around the world. Helskog’s work is therefore of great international importance.
